We're Hiring Music Director & Pianist Chromatic Theatre & Handsome Alice Theatre is currently looking for a Music Director/ Pianist for an upcoming workshop and production of Little Elves, a new musical co-created by Kodie Rollan and Alixandra Cowman. APPLICATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, APRIL 10TH ABOUT THE SHOW Little Elves is a new horror-holiday musical loosely based on the folktale of St. Nicholas & the Evil Butcher. The story centers three young elves who after killing their captor, create an elaborate lie in order to survive. A reimagining of a folktale gone wrong, Little Elves brings the audience into a world of lies, deceit, and desperation. It explores a variety of intersectional themes among which are interrogations of “justified” vengeance, IBPOC relationships to religion, abolitionist interventions within cycles of violence, and the longstanding history of Anti-Asian policies and sentiments in Turtle Island (Canada). Overall, the piece asks the question, “when the odds are stacked against you, what will you do to survive”? The music of the piece is deeply rooted in a variety of folk, country, and pop sounds. Download Full Job Call Apply Now Key Engagement Info: The MD/ Pianist is expected to be part of an upcoming workshop which will take place from May 18 - 22, 2026 with working hours from 10am - 6pm. They are also expected to be part of the production which has a rehearsal timeline of September 28 - October 29, 2026, and shows from October 28 - November 7, 2026. This is a paid position. The fee for the May workshop is $1,000 (+ GST if applicable), and a weekly fee during the production of $1,050/wk for a 6 week engagement period (+ GST if applicable) Both the workshop and production will take place in Calgary, AB - we are specifically looking for local artists, or artists who can work locally, as we have limited budget for travel and accommodations. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Within the workshop, the MD/ pianist will work closely with the composer to explore and devise interstitial music for the production, For both the workshop & production, the MD/pianist will lead and conduct music rehearsals, guiding the actors and band with learning the music of the show, as well as be part of the on-stage band as the pianist during performances. The MD and onstage musicians will also be engaged as ensemble singers. The MD/ pianist is also expected to collaborate closely with the directing team & production team to ensure music aligns with the artistic vision of the show. QUALIFICATIONS/ REQUIREMENTS: Previous experience in music direction for the theatre Shown ability to lead rehearsals, provide constructive feedback, create a clear and balanced sound, motivate performers, and provide a healthy and positive working relationship with all artists in the team, Strong knowledge of music theory and background with both musical theatre and folk genres and playing styles Strong piano playing skills, including the ability to improvise Chromatic Theatre is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruitment process. Jordan Baylon General Director Jordan (they/she/he) is a second generation PilipinX artist, critic and community worker imagining justice and abundance for equity-deserving peoples within the spaces of all our relations, personal, communal and societal. With a decade of experience serving in the non-profit arts sector in Mohkinstsis (Calgary), Jordan advocates a collective, grassroots approach to dismantling and rebuilding organizational structures, processes and ideologies with values of anti-racism and social justice. Jordan is a proud associate of CommunityWise’s Anti-Racist Organizational Change program, and co-authoried RE-Tool, a handbook on equity-driven grantmaking as part of Equity in the Panel Room working group. As an artist, Jordan’s work gnaws at the intersection of queer identity, race, colonialism, food, ritual and the deep dark places that represent our possibilities for pleasure and liberation. Contact

Our mandate is to develop and support diverse voices that contribute to an artistic landscape reflecting the spectrum of diversity we see across our country. We do this by creating opportunities for diverse artists and marginalized community groups through the arts and building bridges that span the societal issues and mechanisms that divide us based on cultural identity. We are looking to engage with individuals who: Share the values of labour-centric anti-oppression Have a passion for the creation of care-based environments, especially in the arts/ non-profit sector Have a passion for theatre or an interest in the arts sector in Moh’kins’tsis (Calgary) as a whole Is interested in deepening its practice in decolonization, equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility from a policy and culture-setting standpoint Share a passion for racialized storytelling Can be a strong advocate and champion for the organization’s work and overall culture Prior experience on a board of directors, particularly with organizations or startups that have scaled up their capacities, is an asset but not a requirement. Strong interpersonal skills are a requirement for this position. Roles & Responsibilities Board members are expected to: Be in attendance at 4 - 6 board meetings throughout the year Provide care-centred leadership, governance, and oversight on the theatre company’s activities Be an advocate for the greater community to hold the organization’s leadership accountable to its community-based values and practices. Chromatic Theatre is looking for applications from writers/ creators who identify as being Indigenous, Black, or a Person of Colour from all levels of experience. At Chromatic Theatre we are dedicated to developing and supporting work by and for the wide breadth of cultural diversity that exists in our province. We are excited for the seventh iteration of our Playwrights Unit that will bring together IBPOC playwrights/creators from Mohkins’tsis (Calgary) and surrounding areas, with the aim of strengthening our community, and investing in new Canadian plays. Artistic Directors from the Calgary community will be invited to this showcase. Build community with other racialized writers Receive an honorarium of $1000 Applications Accepted via Google Forms Within it, applicants must answer questions pertaining to: A description of the writing project you will be working on as part of the playwrights unit Why you would like to be part of the Playwrights Unit, what you hope to get out of the residency, and why you think you’d be a good fit to work with Chromatic Theatre. - Kodie Rollan | Chromatic Theatre
Kodie Rollan Artistic Director Kodie Rollan is a Philippine-born, Scarborough-raised, Mohkinstsis (Calgary)-based playwright, dramaturg, lyricist, arts leader and producer. He is a passionate community-builder and always aims to create spaces for shared storytelling and arts equity within the nonprofit sector. As a storyteller, Kodie is drawn towards explorations of justice within racialized bodies and how we can move towards more abolitionist futures. He is proud to have worked with a variety of theatre companies in both Alberta and Ontario in a variety of capacities. Some of these companies include Downstage Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Lunchbox Theatre, Swallow-A-Bicycle, Alberta Workers Health Centre, fu-Gen Theatre, Carlos Bulosan Theatre, Prime Mover Theatre and The Musical Stage Company. He has also worked on a national scale as a dramaturg in his previous role as the Associate Dramaturg at the Banff Playwrights Lab. Select Playwright credits include: G_OAT Debate featured as part of Lunchbox Theatre’s 2024 Stage One Festival of New pLAYS, The Watchdog Society featured in staged readings with Chromatic Theatre and Carlos Bulosan Theatre, Destination Wedding! Co-created with Jennifer Villaverde and Maria Aragon presented by Sheridan College and The Musical Stage Company, and Alberta Kitchen Party co-created with Alixandra Cowman, Anna Dalgleish, Daniel Fong, Jeremy Carver James, Joe Slabe, and Emiko Muraki, with contributions from Darcy Evans, Tiffany Thomas, and Tenaj Williams presented at Alberta Theatre Projects.
